Johnson continued, “What a ride so far, this journey was crazy this year, so many ups, so many downs and we talked amongst ourselves before the game and said it’s a massive opportunity to make it all worth it. This is what we live for, these moments. To be the MVP of the [MLS Cup Final], it means the whole world, but it means so much more to lift a cup for this club.” (MLS)

It was reported, that the New York City FC were in control of the action for the first half of the Championship.
Only about 41 minutes in, an opener was made by Castellanos, who got to the end of a free-kick into the box from Maximiliano Moralez.
Then Castellanos sent a header back across goal which was deflected off Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark and made its way into the net.

“I just wanted to make sure that we stayed level, we’ve been in that position before. I told the guys that we have the experience, not to panic, not to get down on ourselves, because there’s more of an opportunity to go forward and win the game,” Johnson said about guiding the team to the finish.
NYCFC continued to have better chances in the second half with Moralez being granted a free-kick shortly after the restart, which resulted in Clark to a full effort save.
The match continued with one of the most dramatic late goals in MLS Cup history at four minutes of stoppage time by Timbers forward Mora, which sent the match into extra time.
The dramatic yet scrambled event unfolded as such: Moreno to Chara, to Bravo, to Chara, to Mabiala, to Ikoba, to Mora who sent the ball from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner, at 90′ +4, and tied the game.
“The first half was a little bit difficult, because New York tried to control the ball, control the game. They found a way to score on us, and made it more difficult on us,” Portland’s Diego Chara said. “In the second half, we found a way to tie the game. I think after that it was different for us, getting confidence, playing with the ball, and we created a lot of opportunities.” (CBC)
After that, neither side managed to score following the two 15-minute extra time periods.
As a result, bringing the match to penalty shootouts.
“The highlight of the game was just winning on penalties, you know. It’s such a 50/50 thing. It’s so random. Anyone can win,” one fan said. (CBS News)

“He saved us in the dire moments of penalties. Penalty shootout. I feel like he was the man of the match,” one fan said.
Looking back in time, Portland Timbers won the 2015 Western Conference Finals in the playoffs against FC Dallas.
Later, the American professional men’s soccer club faced the Columbus Crew SC on December 6, 2015, and won their first major trophy, the 2015 MLS Cup Championship title with a final score of 2-1.
Savarese commented on the MLS Cup 2021.
“Before we learn something from it, we need to feel and understand the emotions that we’re going to have after this match, not to achieve what was our goal, to lift the trophy at home,” Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said. (CBC)
New York City Football Club’s goalie, Sean Johnson, took on added responsibility this year as the club’s captain and was a central figure in the historic run.
While making consecutive saves on the first two attempts by the Portland Timbers, Johnson has earned the MLS Cup MVP presented by Audi.
He has been with MLS since 2010, playing with the Chicago Fire as his first team.
In 2017, he then joined NYCFC.
“For me, he’s the big, big winner. He wins us this game in the end,” Deila said.
“The way he speaks to the team, the way he goes in front every day in training and brings people together and also when the big moments are coming, how he stands out time after time, he’s a winner, a real winner and a leader. He’s a captain the whole club should be really proud of.” (MLS)
