108th Grey Cup Champions

CFL’s forever Back-To-Back Champions are the Winnipeg Blue Bombers!

In fact, the Blue Bombers are the first team since Montreal Alouettes in 2009, and 2010 to repeat as the Back-To-Back Grey Cup Champions.

The 108th Grey Cup was played on December 12, 2021, at the Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. A sold-out crowd of more than 26,000 fans cheering on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Blue Bombers.

Only to be won by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in overtime with 33-25 as the final score.

The Blue Bombers are now Back-To-Back Grey Cup Champions, and this marks the third time in team history.

Both previous occasions where the Bombers won Back-To-Back Grey Cups were in 1958-59 and 1961-62.

Both of the previous games involved defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, just as in the 2021 Grey Cup Championship.

It was noted by fans that the 2021 Championship game started slow – there wasn’t a single first down in the first four possessions of the game.

While scoring started by the Bombers about six minutes into the defensive battle after kicker Sergio Castillo made good on a 38-yard field goal. The points were set up by an Alden Darby interception and this set up Winnipeg in prime territory.

For a while, neither team could find any traction on offense.

The Bombers would add a punt single to their score after Marc Liegghio bombed a 70-yard punt into the Hamilton end zone late in the first quarter.

Masoli put together a 48-yard, two-play drive that only took 15 seconds to lead the Ticats into the end zone. Soon after, receiver Steven Dunbar caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Masoli and the halftime alarm sounded off with Hamilton up 10-7.

“Masoli was tremendous, man. He came in after what happened to him last week and he stepped in and made some plays. He opened up their offence a little bit more because he could run the ball more than Dane. It was tough,” said defensive back Nick Taylor. (The Free Press)

Kelly took his first interception back 47 yards all the way down to the Winnipeg 27-yard line. Not long after that, Brandon Banks caught a touchdown pass from Masoli to give Hamilton a 17-10 lead.

The Ticats nearly won in regulation, marching all the way to the Bombers’ five-yard line with time ticking down. But Winnipeg’s defense held.

“In the fourth quarter we handle business. It came down to overtime. We have so much confidence in our offence and then we’re going to go out there and shut the lights off,” said Bombers defensive end Willie Jefferson.

Zach Collaros was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player. He threw a pair of interceptions in the third quarter, however, came up clutch when he was needed the most. All in all, he finished 21-for-32 for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Nic Demski was named the game’s Grey Cup’s Most Outstanding Canadian. He scored a touchdown with seven minutes left in the fourth route.

Adding to the victory, Bombers’ kicker Sergio Castillo, made all five of his field-goal attempts.

“We got the best coach in the CFL. He believed in us. We gave everything that we had. They went in at halftime thinking they had us and we came back and that’s what it’s about,”said wide receiver Rasheed Bailey.

2021 Grey Cup Championship Rings

As the Bombers reported, players, coaches, management, and football operations staff got their first look at the 2021 Championship Rings. This special soiree was held at the Pinnacle Club Saturday night of May 27, 2022.

Summing up all the instant reactions to the unveiling were many combinations of oohs, aahs, gasps, and shouts of pure joy that beautifully captured the moment as everyone saw their well-blinged Grey Cup Championship Ring.

“It almost made me break down and cry,” said right tackle Jermarcus Hardrick when he got his first look at the jewellery.

“We sacrificed a lot in 2021 and seeing this just makes me love the guys even more and want to do it again. (Winnipeg Blue Bombers)

“That’s a pretty ring, and it’s all about the ring, man. I love everything about it, but what I love the most is the ‘Back-to-Back’ part. I got here in 2015 and for us to be able to do what we did is something I’ll never forget” said Jermarcus Hardrick, offensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Bombers noted, that the 2021 Grey Cup Championship Rings were made by Baron Championship Rings – the same company that helped design and make the 2019 Grey Cup Championship Rings for the club – with the help of a design committee that included Adam Bighill, Nic Demski, Willie Jefferson and Rhéanne Marcoux, the Blue Bombers Director, Creative & Content.

“They’re amazing. I mean, I was on the ring committee so I had an idea of what they would look like, but to see it now in person and see how big and heavy it is,” said Demski.

Demski was among the players who opted to get a special slogan inscribed on the inside of the ring along with the Grey Cup score – 33-25 – the team slogan of ‘FIFO’ and ‘For the W.’

Demski’s Grey Cup Championship Ring also reads ‘4 Life’, just as his 2019 ring did.

“I thought the 2019 ring was big and I love them both, but this one is insane.
