The Story Behind the 2025 Montana State University Football Championship Ring

April 30, 2026 — The 2025 Montana State Bobcats did something only one other team in program history had done: win it all. Finishing with a 14-2 record and a perfect 8-0 Big Sky play, the Bobcats won 14 consecutive games to close the season.

As a result, capping it with a 35-34 overtime victory over Illinois State at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville on January 5, 2026. This marks the program’s first FCS National Championship since 1984, a 41-year drought that has finally ended.

The details behind the 2025 Montana State University Championship Ring

A crown fit for Champions, the front:

  • The Bobcats athletics mascot logo sits in sapphire durilium atop a golden durilium Championship trophy, surrounded by clear and sapphire custom-cut stones.
  • “National Champions” is inscribed in white durilium at the top and bottom, with “2025” in golden durilium flanked by radiant-cut stones.

A visual metaphor for the season’s momentum, the wrap:

  • Sapphire blue stones trace the first edge, while clear stones cascade along the second, pouring down onto the ring base.

Four words that defined the season, inside the base and top:

  • When the ring opens: 31-28. Great Divide Trophy. 48-23.
  • The scores of the two Cat-Griz games that bookended the Big Sky title run.
  • Below them: “Won’t Be Beat”.
  • Inside the Top: The Bobcat Built tire triangle graphic in blue. A rallying symbol of the program’s identity, hidden inside, for those who earned it.

Bobcats’ Big Sky Conference Championship titles, left shoulder:

  • “Big Sky Champs” in white durilium with stones in an arch, and “Back to Back” in golden durilium bannered above the Big Sky trophy graphic, all set against a football field-textured background.

Making every ring uniquely theirs, right shoulder:

  • Each recipient’s name in white durilium, the iconic Montana State “M” in blue and gold, and their number or position below.

The Exclusive Ring Box:

  • Baron® Championship Rings delivered a first for this team: a brand-new Exclusive Wooden Ring Box.
  • Featuring custom etching on the top, front, sides, and inside flap, with a custom placeholder for the 2025 Montana State University Football Championship Ring at its center.
  • A keepsake as lasting as the Championship itself.

Bobcats Receive Their National Championship Rings

On April 25, 2026, ahead of the Sonny Holland Classic spring game, members of the National Championship-Winning Bobcat football team received their 2025 National Championship Rings in a ceremony that brought the Bobcat faithful back to their feet. The crowd packed the stands, the ovations were loud, and for one afternoon in Bozeman, last season lived again.

When the rings were revealed, the reaction said everything. Players seeing their Championship Rings from Baron® for the first time couldn’t hide it.

“That thing’s fat, man. Oh my! Holy! It’s huge!” This expression occurs when a ring reflects the meaning of victory.
Last year’s Champions, who included Julius Davis and Paul Brott, returned to Bobcat Stadium for the ring ceremony under the loud applause of the spectators who made history with them.

For the current Bobcat players, it was something more: a passing of the torch, a symbolic close on one extraordinary chapter and the opening of the next.

“A lot of emotions, a lot of things going on,” said safety Caden Dowler. “Really putting a cap on the whole last year, ring ceremony thing, and we get to move on to this year. Capping off the spring game that way was awesome. This is a good way to move into next year.”

Head coach Brent Vigen reflected on the intention behind the timing. “Great to recognize the ’25 team and get our rings out, getting that turned around so today could be part celebration and part spring was the intent back in January.”

Montana State Back-to-Back Big Sky Champions

Before the Nashville Championships, Montana State had already etched their name in Big Sky history, claiming the team’s third consecutive Big Sky Conference title with a flawless conference record.

    • The Bobcats were named Big Sky Champions in 1964, 1966, 1967, 1972, 1976, 1979, 1984, 2011, 2024, and 2025.
    • Montana State’s full list of Big Sky Football Co-Championship titles also includes: 1968, 1982, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2010, 2012, 2022.

This is an extraordinary run of dominance in one of college football’s most competitive leagues.

The Big Sky Conference Individual Honors

The 2025 Football season was punctuated by individual excellence recognized across the Big Sky Conference:

    • The league named a Bobcat its Defensive Player of the Year
    • Another player as Newcomer of the Year.
    • Additionally, head coach Brent Vigen earned his third Big Sky Coach of the Year award, joining an elite group of coaches in conference history.

The 2025-26 Football Championship Subdivision's Championship Moment

In overtime, trailing 34-28, Montana State faced a defining moment at fourth-and-10 from the 14-yard line. Quarterback Justin Lamson, named the game’s Most Outstanding Player, fired left and found Taco Dowler in the end zone.

The extra point split the uprights. The final score: Montana State 35, Illinois State 34. The Bobcats were named FCS 2025-26 National Champions.
