The Lancers took a huge step up this season after winning the Division IV Regional Championship and Southern Section Division 4 Championship last season.

The regional title is the second in three years for the Friars (21-6-2), who won the Division I Championship in 2022. The two Trinity League teams were meeting for the fourth time this season and for the second time in a Championship Contest.

CIF 100 Years: The History of CIF

California Interscholastic Federation's (CIF) establish year

For the 2014-15 school year, the California Interscholastic Federation CIF reached its 100th anniversary and created the “CIF 100th Anniversary – A Century of Sports” video under Executive Producer Roger Blake. This production included contributors like Former Napa Mayor Ed Barwick, Former CIF Commissioner Tom Byrnes, 5-time Olympic Medalist John Naber, Jeremy Lin Professional Basketball Player, and many more.

The history of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is deeply woven into the fabric of high school sports, shaping generations of student-athletes who have pushed their limits, both on and off the field. It was established in 1914 with the purpose of unifying and standardizing high school athletics throughout California, pulling sports under an educational model that emphasized both competition and character-building.

CIF put together a rulebook that, through the years, as the organization continued to meet new challenges and developments, would create the avenue for competition and growth of athletes.

From age and amateur rules designed to ensure fairness to opportunities provided for Championship competition, CIF remains steadfast in its commitment to the values of education-based athletics that make high school sports an essential part of student development.

Track and field, the longest-running CIF state competition, has been a cornerstone of CIF’s legacy, producing some of the country’s top athletes and Olympians. Since 1915, the California State Track and field Championships have showcased the best talent the state has to offer, earning national recognition for their high level of competition.

The unique blend of California’s favorable climate, excellent coaching, and deep commitment to sports has consistently fostered elite athletes. Football, too, rose to prominence early in the CIF’s history, with Bakersfield, California, becoming a football powerhouse in the 1920s.

Whether in track and field or football, CIF’s State Championships have always represented the pinnacle of high school sports, bringing together athletes from diverse backgrounds to compete and excel at the highest levels.

Jeremy Lin, a former CIF athlete, advises young athletes to pursue sports if they truly love the game and feel passionate about being part of a team. He emphasizes the importance of seizing the opportunity while young, as high school sports are a unique experience that may not come again.

Lin shares how his parents encouraged him to keep playing because of his love for basketball, despite never expecting to play at higher levels. His message is simple: if you love the sport, go for it and make the most of the opportunity.

“My parents always encouraged me to just go for it. They saw how much I loved basketball so they said play as long as you can,” said Jeremy Lin, a Professional Basketball Player.

CIF and Title IX

The CIF has played a pivotal role in advancing opportunities for female athletes over the last century, standing as a leader even before Title IX became law in 1972.

As equality in sports gradually became a movement across the United States by the 1960s, CIF had already been doing its homework, providing interscholastic sports to girls. Indeed, Beverly Hills High School had already introduced girls’ swimming and tennis into their programs as early as 1955, well ahead of Title IX.

The historic law built on these programs, opening up opportunities for female athletes that they never had before and inspiring growth in athletic programs everywhere.

Today, California is considered the world leader in women’s sports, with innovators like Billie Jean King opening doors for hundreds of thousands of other young women. The impact of Title IX on CIF and the nation has indeed been nothing short of transformational, serving not only to even out the playing field but also to tout the accomplishments of female athletes at all levels in every sport imaginable.

CIF Athelet’s Reflection

Athletes often reflect on how sports and their CIF experience have shaped their lives, emphasizing the deep impact that goes beyond the playing field. Many express that without sports, they wouldn’t be the same person, with one noting how it’s provided the foundation for personal growth and future success.

Others highlight the discipline and resilience gained from being an athlete, lessons learned that rival those taught in the classroom. For many, sports are a release from stress, a source of motivation, and an outlet to push their limits daily.

Bonds created through sports are lasting, teaching life lessons and shaping character, as athletes learn to rise after setbacks and continue striving for greatness.

Shaping Athletes and Building Character

Since its founding in 1914, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has been a guiding force in high school athletics, promoting equity, character development, and academic growth. CIF has continuously emphasized the educational value of sports, ensuring that athletics are not only competitive but also controlled and structured for the benefit of young people.

Over the past century, the organization has adapted to modern challenges, including advancements in medical science to enhance player safety, all while maintaining its commitment to the personal growth of student-athletes. The influence of high school sports, as many former athletes and leaders have noted, extends far beyond the field, shaping future doctors, lawyers, and community leaders who credit CIF athletics for building their leadership and resilience.

Baron Championship Rings:  Baron® CIF Partnership Reel

Above all, CIF is deeply rooted in love for the game and the positive experiences sports bring to students. From Championship events to daily practices, CIF has helped build a sense of community and pride in athletes, extending beyond the competition into lifelong lessons learned.

The leaders within CIF continue to fight for the welfare of all its student-athletes by making certain every player has a place to succeed on and off the field, no matter what school they are from.

As the organization looks toward the future, its legacy of promoting fun, teamwork, and personal development in high school sports remains as strong as ever.
