Daniel Alfredsson
Born December 11, 1972, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Daniel Alfredsson was drafted by the Senators in the sixth round, the 133rd selection of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
Daniel was appointed captain of the Ottawa Senators prior to the 1999-2000 season and held that role through 2012-13. As of July 2009, he became the longest-serving active captain in the NHL.
Alfredsson’s productivity peaked in the 2000s, and Alfredsson played in the NHL All-Star Games again in 2004 and 2008. He finished seventh in NHL scoring in 2003-04 with 80 points. Through his 17 seasons with the Senators, he enjoyed 13 seasons with 20 or more goals, including his career-best 43 goals during 2005-06. That same season, he collected 103 points, good for fourth-best in the league that season and was rewarded with a berth on the NHL’s Second All-Star Team. In the period from 2000-01 to 2008-09, Alfredsson scored 723 points, third through that period behind Joe Thornton (823) and Jarome Iginla (724).
The shootout was introduced to NHL teams for the 2005-06 season and on October 5, 2005, Alfredsson made NHL history by scoring the league’s first shootout goal, beating Ed Belfour of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After 17 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Alfredsson surprised the hockey world by signing with the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent on July 5, 2013. During his career in Ottawa, he set franchise records by playing 1,178 regular season games, scoring 426 goals, and adding 682 assists for 1,108 points.
It was strange to see Daniel Alfredsson in Detroit red and white, a move he made with the hope of winning a Stanley Cup Championship. He said, “I had not won a Stanley Cup and that’s a big priority for me.”
A prodigious worker at both ends of the rink and a leader, whether in the NHL or for Sweden, Daniel Alfredsson’s highly successful career led to his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player category in 2022.

Herb Carnegie
Honoured Posthumously
Born in Toronto, Ontario on November 8, 1919, Herb grew up listening to ‘Hockey Night in Canada,’ dreaming of one day following his Toronto Maple Leafs heroes to the NHL.
The first all-Black line in semi-pro hockey was comprised of Herb and Ossie Carnegie along with Manny McIntyre. Herb described their line in his memoir A Fly in a Pail of Milk, “I was both a scorer and playmaker, Ossie combined excellent positional play with a wicked shot and Manny took no guff from anyone.”
In 1948, Carnegie was invited to the training camp of the New York Rangers. Although most at the time admitted that he was among the best players at camp, the Rangers only offered him a contract to play in their minor league system.
At the time, Carnegie said, “The most devastating thing to me was knowing that players on my team were getting the opportunity whose record wasn’t as good as mine, which clearly showed discrimination and racism of the highest order.”
Following his retirement from playing, Carnegie enjoyed success in the investment industry. He founded Future Aces, one of Canada’s first hockey schools in 1955. In 1956, he introduced the Future Aces Creed in an attempt to promote good Attitude, Cooperation, Example, and Sportsmanship among young people. Herb was also an inventor, creating ‘The Carnegie System’ which was the first instructional hockey board used in the NHL, as well as creating games to teach sports. Carnegie was also an avid golfer, winning 23 championships, and was the Ontario Senior Golf Champion in 1977 and 1978.
Herb Carnegie’s hockey career was honoured through his induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 – overall he is a member of 14 Hall of Fames.
Herb Carnegie died on March 9, 2012, at the age of 92. He was posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category in 2022.

Roberto Luongo
One of the top goaltenders of his era, Roberto Luongo was born on April 4, 1979, in Montreal, Quebec. Although he began playing organized hockey as a forward, by the time he was 11 he switched to the goaltender.
While playing Junior with the Val D’Or Foreurs of the Quebec Major Hockey League (QMJHL), Luongo was awarded the Mike Bossy Trophy as the league’s best professional prospect in 1997. At the NHL Entry Draft that summer, he was selected fourth overall by the New York Islanders.
In 1999-2000, Luongo turned pro with the Islanders’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliates, the Lowell Lock Monsters, but was summoned to the parent club and made his NHL debut on November 28, 1999. Luongo’s performances earned him the starting goaltender’s role that season, but he was dealt to the Florida Panthers at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to the 2006-07 season, Luongo was traded to the Vancouver Canucks and was later voted to start at the 2007 NHL All-Star Game. By season’s end, he had won 47 games while recording a goals-against average of 2.29 and a save percentage of .921.
Prior to the 2008-09 season, the Canucks named Luongo their 12th captain. He became the first NHL goaltender to serve as a captain since 1947-48. The unconventional decision went against the NHL’s rule that prohibited goaltenders from serving as captains, so Luongo incorporated the ‘C’ into the design of his mask.
In 2008-09, Luongo made his fourth NHL All-Star Game appearance. That season, he set a franchise record with nine shutouts as the Canucks finished first in the Northwest Division. Injuries plagued Luongo in 2009-10, but he managed to record a 40-wins.
Roberto competed for Canada at several international tournaments. He participated in the 1998 and 1999 IIHF Ice Hockey World Junior Championships, taking silver in 1999 and being named Best Goaltender. He competed at the 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships, winning gold in 2003 and 2004, and silver in 2005. The Canadian team won the 2004 World Cup. Luongo was also a member of the Olympic team in 2006 and won gold at the 2010 and 2014 Games.
In 2022, Roberto Luongo reached the pinnacle in personal hockey honours when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Player Category.

Daniel Sedin
Daniel Sedin was born on September 26, 1980, in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, just six minutes after his identical twin brother, Henrik. The twins began playing organized hockey at the age of eight, although they seldom played on the same line until Daniel switched to wing from centre at 14.
By the time they were 16, both Sedins had begun playing professionally with Modo Hockey in the Swedish Hockey League. In his second season, Daniel led Modo in scoring and helped the club achieve the second regular season title in franchise history. At the conclusion of the season, Daniel and Henrik were named co-recipients of the Golden Puck as the Swedish player(s) of the year.
By the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the Sedins were considered top prospects and were expected to be selected early in the first round and they expected to be selected by separate teams.
They both returned to Modo to play one more season before joining Vancouver for the 2000-01 NHL season, becoming just the fourth pair of twins to play in the NHL. Daniel finished his rookie season with 20 goals and 34 points.
After emerging as one of the best players on the team during the 2005-06 season, Daniel recorded six consecutive seasons with 20 or more goals and 70 or more points. In 2006-07, Daniel led the team in scoring with 36 goals and 84 points.
The Sedins both played their final NHL game on April 7, 2018. Daniel Sedin concluded his career having played 1,306 regular season games through 17 seasons. He scored 393 goals and assisted on 648 for a total of 1,041 points. In playoff action, he added 25 goals and 46 assists for 71 points in 102 games. Despite their retirement, the Sedin twins were jointly awarded the King Clancy Trophy for the player(s) who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and gives back to his community. The Vancouver Canucks retired the numbers of both Sedins – Daniel’s 22 as well as Henrik’s 33 – in February 2020.
Both Sedins competed for Sweden on numerous occasions. Daniel was a three-time Olympian, winning gold in 2006 and silver in 2014. He has appeared in two IIHF World Junior Championships and four IIHF World Championships, winning gold in 2013 and bronze in 1999 and 2001.
