March 13, 2023  –  Highland Springs High School Springers are 2022 State Champions!

The Springers defeated Maury Commodores Varsity Boy Basketball by a final score of 63-62.

As a result, winning the official Championship title: 2022 VHSL Boys Basketball Class 5 State Champions.

Virginia High School League is an alliance of Virginia’s Public and approved non-boarding non-public high schools. Thereupon, the high school league VHSL alliance promotes education, leadership, sportsmanship, character, and citizenship for students by establishing and maintaining high standers for school activities and competitions.

The 2022 VHSL Boys Basketball Class 5 Quarterfinals started on March 4 with Highland Springs defeating Albemarle Patriots Varsity Boys Basketball 58-46. In the State Semifinals, the Springers faced Riverside Ram Varsity Boys Basketball and won the game by 62-45.

March 11, 2022, marked the State Finals which included Highland Springs playing against Matthew Fontaine Maury High School. The Championship title was down to the last point. The Springers won 63-62, defeating Maury on a game-winning rebound and free throw by Khristian Martin.

Making this Championship the Springers’ third Basketball State title and first since 2007.

2022 Highland Springs Championship Ring Ceremony

Highland Springs High School held a special Championship Ring Ceremony on August 7, 2022, honoring the 2022 Boys Basketball Champions.

The ceremony had approximately 100 attendees, which included three spokesmen: school principal Kenneth White, Tennyson Lee Daniel, and Henrico County board of supervisors representative Tyrone Nelson.

“Not that we’re better, it’s just different. There’s a level of greatness that we expect from our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and personnel,” said Tennyson.

Once Nelson revealed the team’s accomplishments, then each player was given a copy on a plaque, their own custom 2022 Highland Springs State Championship Ring packaged in their own wooden Championship Ring Box, and a team bracelet.

“These kids are very athletic, they love basketball, they love football and we’re just fortunate as coaches to have some real talented young people in our building,” Tennyson said.

The team’s bookkeeper and managers received Championship Rings as did all of Springers’ coaching staff made up of former players.

Lee Daniel said, when he asked Tennyson what he wanted the program’s Championship Rings to look like, the coach responded simply — “Make it icy.”

The blinged and bedazzled 2022 Highland Springs State Championship Rings feature 2022 on top of three State Championship trophies, to honor Highland Springs’ two previous basketball state titles in 2003 and 2007.

These previous Championships include legendary Coach George Lancaster who took the job in 1979 and retired in 2016 after 704 career wins.

The Springers invited Lancaster to the Championship Ring Ceremony and Tennyson recognized the former coach who has been like a father to him.

“We paid homage to those that paved the way before us, I love that man,” Tennyson said of Lancaster. “He was part of our championship run. … We will always pay tribute to the legend that he is.”

Tennyson continued.

“Varina is growing, football and basketball. And here at Highland Springs, it goes without saying we have one of the strongest football programs in the country. Our basketball program has been consistent throughout the years. We achieved something this year that we expect to continue to achieve.”
