Inside the Game: Aaliyah Faddoul on Passion, Challenges, and Success

A Passion Ignited: How Soccer Became Part Of My Life

What inspired you to pursue a career in soccer?

Aaliyah: So, from a young age, my parents put me in the game. My mom was the soccer player of the two and eventually, as I kept playing and kept playing. I ended up being somewhat good and had a little bit of something. So when you’re good at something it makes it easy to love it and it feeds into my passion for the game.

Facing the Toughest Challenge — Moving Away from Home

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced, and how have you overcome them?

Aaliyah: I’d say my biggest challenge was moving from home. I’m super close with all my family and it’s different. I’m from a small town in Canada, and seeing familiar faces wasn’t a thing when I moved away. So it was super new, it’s a different country, right? It’s 12 hours away, I don’t have family and I feel so young! I’d say moving away.

Unwavering Support: The Family Behind My Success

Who has been your greatest source of support, and how has their encouragement impacted you?

Aaliyah: I definitely can’t say it’s one person because it really and truthfully is not. I’d have to give the biggest credit to my family, though. My parents and siblings are just as dedicated as I am. From missing like their summer plans to come watch my games, and driving me to practice in the States every day. They’re my biggest supporters, and that’s a lot of dedication.

The Game I’ll Never Forget

What has been your most memorable moment, on or off the field?

Aaliyah: Well, there’s a ton, but my favourite is definitely on the field. This was when we beat Coastal Carolina at home. My freshman year, so last season I scored two goals that game and had an assist. That got me Sun Belt Player of the Week, which in the greater scheme of things really-it was a big aspect of why I got my Freshmen of the Year [Award]. So, I’d say that game was unforgettable.

Words of Wisdom for Young Aspiring Athletes

What advice would you give to young girls aspiring to play soccer at a collegiate level or higher?

Aaliyah: I would say, stay focused. I have it written right on my locker, like two big words, “Stay Focused” and it kind of just reminds me that it doesn’t matter what he said or what she’s saying and it doesn’t matter how life goes, as long as you stay focused on you and you become the best version of yourself possible with hard work and just overall happiness. Then everything else will really fall into place.

The Rise of Women’s Sports—A Movement in Motion

How do you think women’s sports are evolving and gaining more recognition?

Aaliyah: Well, I can start by saying it’s a great time to be a female athlete. Women’s sports are evolving so, so much. From viewers and media coverage and overall salary because of these things. It’s on the climb. It’s not exactly where it needs to be because we can do so much better. But it’s in a good spot right now. So, it is a good time to lock in as female athlete.

A Team Like No Other—Bonding Beyond Borders

Coming from so many different backgrounds, can you give us some insight on your relationship with the girls on your team?

Aaliyah: Yeah, I mean you nailed it because we do have so many players from everywhere. For example, in the household that I’m in I have one roommate who’s from Denmark, and the other from Utah. We have a bunch of Spaniards on the team, obviously, I’m from Canada, there’s a couple more Canadian girls this year.

We got a girl from Japan. We have so many people coming from so many different places.

I think in a way we lean on each other. We’re able to bond in this way because we’re all here for the same reason. All of us have certain traits that brought us here and similarities in the sense that we’re all trying to win a Championship.

Everyone’s working hard, everyone’s trying to be happy and being their best version of themselves. So it works. We all melt together really well on and off the field, and it makes for a really good environment.
