In 1948 and 1949, the Globetrotters made history by defeating the NBA’s World Champion Minneapolis Lakers twice. These extraordinary victories clearly showcased that African-American athletes could excel at the highest professional level, significantly accelerating the integration of the NBA.

That impact became concrete in 1950 when Globetrotter Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton became the first African-American player to sign an NBA contract, joining the New York Knicks.
