Jaiden Lyons: A Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Performance
Inspiration
What inspired you to pursue a career as a professional dancer, and how did it lead you to become a professional dancer?
Jaiden: At a young age, I always knew dance was a huge passion in my life. I would be that kid who would always put on performances for the family. Dance was introduced to me when I was 4 years old, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until High School when I attended Walkerville’s WCCA program.
I never thought I would ever be able to pursue dance at a professional level until my high school teacher, Roger Wellington, gave me all of the encouragement and push that I needed! He made the goal seem tangible and heavily believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself.
Roger then introduced me to PURE Dance Academy which opened up the doors to dive deeper into my training from teachers who were supportive, uplifting, and challenged me to work outside of my comfort zone. PURE gave me the opportunity to connect with industry professionals through dance conventions/competitions and pushed me to pursue this at the highest level. My teachers were able to provide me with opportunity, and quality training, and instilled a fearless but humble confidence that continues to aid in my success today!
Through my journey I’ve been able to travel and assist with a dance company (LA Dance Magic) all across the US, I received a full scholarship to Studio School (a commercial dance program) in Los Angeles, and have been able to work on music videos, movies, tv shows, live performances and much more within Canada and the US (all while be represented by agents in both Canada and USA).
Jaiden Lyons: Passion, Perseverance, and the Art of Dance – LA Dance Magic Dance Company
To say I’m grateful for my dance journey would be an understatement. I really owe a huge thank you to all of my educators and teachers who’ve inspired me to take the leap and follow a dream that has always been so near and dear to my heart.
Jaiden Lyons: Passion, Perseverance, and the Art of Dance – “A dance career is not for everyone. You have to be willing to be flexible, make sacrifices, and embrace the unknown—but if you’re willing to make it work, it’s surely an amazing journey!”
Challenges
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a dancer, and how have you overcome them?
Jaiden: As a dancer, I have had to sacrifice a lot of time and energy to delve deep into my craft as anyone does when pursuing and kickstarting a career. Specifically with dance, there’s not a lot of opportunity to pursue it at the professional level in Windsor.
If you want to do this as a profession you need to be willing to relocate to Los Angeles, New York, or Atlanta if the US option is for you. If the Canadian route is for you, then Toronto or Vancouver.
Even with all of those options listed, geographically it’s still very limited to where you could pursue this career. As someone who is extremely close with their family, living in Los Angeles was such a challenge for me mentally and emotionally.
I knew I was in the perfect place to dive deeper into my craft but always felt like I was missing a huge piece of my heart.
I’m grateful for all of the jobs, training and connections I’ve made along the way but am happy that I now reside in Toronto where the commute back home is much more manageable.
This was a compromise for me to be able to do the thing I love while also being close to family.
A dance career is not for everyone. You have to be willing to be flexible within your schedule, and when an opportunity arises you have to make a lot of sacrifices in order to follow through. The industry works fast and waits for no one.
So being open to auditioning for the job on a Friday, booking that job on Sunday, and then following through with a week or two of rehearsals on the Monday that could potentially be in another city, seems a little crazy.
That sort of lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but if you’re willing to make it work, it’s surely an amazing journey!
I hope to one day bring a pre-professional dance program to Windsor to help all of the talented dancers be able to pursue a career in the arts, gaining the knowledge, training and connections in their own city so they feel better prepared when exploring and diving into the industry.
Training & Preparation
Can you share a glimpse into your training routine and how you stay performance-ready throughout the season?
Jaiden: In order to keep my body optimally ready throughout auditions, performances, and even teaching I practice yoga and pilates regularly. Both of these practices go hand-in-hand with dance vocabulary.
Yoga helps keep my body stretched and flexible which limits injuries when executing technical elements within choreography, and pilates helps keep me strong and conditioned in order to maintain great endurance throughout different routines/performances.
These workouts are also fun and relaxing which makes them 100% more enjoyable! I would recommend everyone to take up pilates and yoga during their spare time.
Pursuing a job that’s extremely demanding on your body warrants a lot of rest and recovery. It’s important to make sure you’re prioritizing different ways to help your body reset. I love indulging in self-care days at Othership (a sauna and cold bath spa in Toronto), massages, and lots of stretching!
Especially as our bodies get older, it’s critical to make sure you have an effective pre-dance routine, and post-dance recovery to really optimize the longevity of your dance career.
Jaiden Lyons: Passion, Perseverance, and the Art of Dance – “Being a professional dancer isn’t the ‘norm’ for most people, but having an army of people who believe in your talent and passion makes you feel like you can conquer anything”
Support System
Who has been your greatest source of support in your journey, and how has their encouragement impacted you?
Without a doubt, my family and my boyfriend have been my rock throughout it all. Whenever times get hard, or I start to feel discouraged throughout my journey, my family are my number one supporter and will always remind me of my purpose. I started dancing because I love it. It’s a passion that burns bright in my soul and ignites an energy in myself that I want to share with others.
When you turn your passion into your job, you sometimes start to lose sight of why you even started in the first place. My family continues to encourage me to always lead with love, positivity and gratitude! Being able to have people around you who believe in you and uplift you makes the hard days seem very far and few between.
Their encouragement throughout my journey has been the powerhouse of why I’m still doing it to this day. My parents have always said, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”.
Being a professional dancer isn’t the “norm” for most people due to the inconsistency that it may bring, but having an army of people behind you who believe in your talent and passion makes you feel like you can conquer anything!
Without the encouragement and belief from my family, I don’t think I would have ever been able to pursue dance or even become the professional that I am today. I am truly grateful for them and their continued enthusiasm and support!
Representation in Dance
How important is it to you to represent diversity and inclusivity as a pro dancer?
Jaiden: It’s extremely important to have different representations being celebrated throughout the industry. I love how the dance community continues to be one of the most diverse and inclusive professional settings!
Historically dance has been curated, influenced and evolved through multiple cultural backgrounds.
Each style of dance has its own history derived from different cultures, innovators, languages, etc. It’s important to keep the history of dance alive through education, research and representation.
Multiculturalism has been a huge part of what makes dance so special, universal and timeless. Being able to cultivate this environment makes all communities and cultures feel celebrated, which is why I love dance so much.
I’m honoured to be a part of a community that believes heavily on the importance of representing diversity and inclusiveness through all facets of the art form.
Jaiden Lyons: Passion, Perseverance, and the Art of Dance – “Being able to see the growth throughout my career has been extremely humbling.”
Memorable Moments
What has been your most unforgettable moment as a dancer so far, either on or off the floor?
Jaiden: I am beyond grateful for the life I get to live. I have travelled all across the US dancing and training with industry professionals, went to a dance school in Los Angeles, danced in a Lifetime Movie with Corbin Bleu, worked with Keke Palmer on her music video, and just recently danced in a TV Show over the summer, and am now enjoying my second year on the Raptor’s North Side Crew.
At a young age I’ve been able to accomplish a lot of my dreams that I have written about in journals for years and being able to see it all come to fruition has been nothing short of surreal.
I’d be lying if I said there is one specific moment that comes to mind because I’m truly just so grateful for it all. Being able to see the growth throughout my career has been extremely humbling, and if I could say anything to my younger self I would just tell her to enjoy the journey and to soak every moment up because it will fly by, and these truly are the most unforgettable moments you’ll experience.
Mental Strength & Motivation
How do you maintain mental strength and motivation during the high demands of a dancer or recital season?
Jaiden: Being mentally strong is the most important quality when becoming a professional dancer, especially when auditioning.
You’re going to hear a lot of “no’s” throughout your career whether that’d be, “I’m sorry you’re not ready for the role”, “No you’re not the dancer we’re looking for”, “Thank you for your time but you look too much like the artist so we’re heading in a different direction”, etc.
It’s important to always remind yourself that there are multiple different factors casting directors put into account when looking for the right performer for a job. It’s not always just about how talented and hard-working you are.
As long as you always put your best foot forward, show up with a positive attitude, and have fun that’s all that matters when it comes to auditioning!
This was a skill I had to learn at a young age in the dance world. I always remind myself that the right job and opportunity will never miss me. If it’s meant to be, it will be! Sometimes it can be a hard truth if your “dream job” doesn’t fall into place, but at the end of the day, I always root myself back into my gratitude.
It’s always good to remind myself that I do this because I love it and other opportunities will always arise that better align with me!
Advice for Aspiring Dancers
What advice would you give to young dancers aspiring to perform at the professional level?
Jaiden: That dream of yours was planted in your heart for a reason, so go for it! My whole life I knew there was something special about dance but if I was never encouraged or pushed to pursue it, the entire trajectory of my life would be different.
It takes just one ounce of courage to follow your dreams, and I promise you that you will never ever regret the choice of doing what you love.
Specifically with dance, do your research on programs that you align with (things you want to learn, training that you want, etc), network with industry professionals to gain more knowledge and understanding of the industry, and train in rooms that will push you outside of your comfort zone to become the best version of you!
It may seem a little impossible at first, but if you want to make something work, you will find a way.
Future Goals
What are your future aspirations, both as a dancer and beyond?
Jaiden:I touched on this earlier but I hope to one day bring a pre-professional dance training program to the Windsor-Essex area.
The talent that comes out of our city is remarkable, but we have limited resources for post-graduate students to make the transition from “competitive dance” to the professional world.
You would have to leave the city to get this type of training or knowledge which I understand is not feasible for every family and dancer.
My goal would be to bridge that gap and give aspiring dancers the knowledge and understanding of how to network, market and conduct themselves within a professional setting before making the leap into the crazy world that is the dance industry.
I would also love to get my pilates and yoga certification and dive a bit deeper into the fitness and wellness world!
