Can you share a bit about your journey and how you came to your current role as Financial Controller at Baron® Championship Rings?

I have been working in Financial Accounting for (I hate to admit it) 30 years. I graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Windsor. Since then, I have worked in multiple industries.

I have worked in Home Construction, for a Mortgage Company, Property Developer, Tool and Mold, and Construction Manufacturing and am currently in the Jewelry Manufacturing business.

Outside of your professional role, do you have any favourite sports or leisure activities that you enjoy?

The last few years I have taken an interest in gardening. I spent the first few years planting perennials and watching them grow over time.

I get excited in the spring as the first bit of green comes up and then it goes from there. This year I am dabbling in annuals – something new.

Could you highlight a particularly memorable project/ring or accomplishment during your time at Baron®?

I really liked the Vanier Cup, University of Western Rings, they were stunning with the purple custom stone.

As a Financial Controller, you’re accustomed to managing finances strategically. If you suddenly had unlimited resources for a day, what would be your dream family outing or activity, and why?

I would love to go back to the Caribbean with my family, sit on the beach and read and watch them do fun activities….but it really doesn’t matter where we are, as long as we are together.

In what ways do you collaborate with other departments within the company to achieve financial goals and objectives?

My primary focus is to show the most accurate accounting results to enable management to make decisions. To accomplish this, I must rely on all other departments.

I have often communicated to the team that everything in this company, in one form or another, ends up on my desk through the numbers. The first year was about learning the business and getting a feel for how things worked.

Since then, it has been about implementing new software and now, my goal is maximizing the use of the software to enable everyone to view the same data but in a way that can be useful to each user and department. This involves working with each department to determine their needs and then satisfying those needs in the system.

I also must show how their work moves to the next department and the department after that so that they understand how their work affects others and create true collaboration using the
software.

As the Financial Controller, what advice would you offer to aspiring finance professionals looking to excel in a specialized industry like ours?

My advice would be to always be willing to pivot if something isn’t working, be willing to look for another solution and look at a problem with new eyes.

Learn all aspects of the work that ends up on your desk and be able to work in collaboration with your team because you understand what they do and how they do it. Be patient and have empathy.
